How We Can Help the Women Affected by Hurricane Harvey

How We Can Help the Women Affected by Hurricane Harvey

As you probably have seen all over the news, a massive Category 4 hurricane hit land this past Friday in Texas and is continuing to severely affect the residents in the surrounding areas. According to The National Weather Service, some areas have seen more than 30 inches of rain and the downpour will continue through Wednesday. People have lost everything - their homes, cars, personal belongings and even family and friends. Right now, there have been 10 deaths and numerous injuries. Living in New York, I count my blessings and can't help but think back to when Hurricane Sandy wreaked havoc on my beautiful state. The one thing I do like to remember is how everyone across the country banded together and came to our aid. From monetary donations to volunteers coming from all over the country to help with relief efforts. I remember thanking one of the men who finally got the power back up and running on my block and asking him where he was from - North Carolina. It put a smile on my face knowing that these men took the time to travel here to New York to work around the clock to help people that they didn't even know.

Now its our turn to step up and help out the victims of Hurricane Harvey. It could be as simple as donating money to the Red Cross to help with general relief. But, while I was searching Instagram for organizations, I came across a bunch of female focused groups gathering donations of items I would have never thought to donate. Bras, menstrual products and diapers to name a few. These women lost everything they have and sometimes these items are looked over by larger relief organizations. Please consider donating in any way you can - I know the minute I get home I am raiding my drawers and donating all of my old bras!

I Support the Girls - http://isupportthegirls.org/

Support the Girls collects and distributes donations of new/used bras (including sports bras) and new sealed packages of tampons and maxi pads to homeless women and girls across North America. They had posted on Instagram that they will be sending relief packages down to the Houston area. I am sure we all have bras that we don't wear any more, so consider donating them!

Texas Diaper Bank - http://www.texasdiaperbank.org/

The Texas Diaper Bank has been working to meet the basic needs of vulnerable babies, children with disabilities and seniors. Diapers are not provided by disaster relief agencies, so they are stepping up to donate diaper kits to families who were displaced by the hurricane. They are also accepting cash donations to go towards this kits if you are not able to send diapers!

Catholic Charities - https://catholiccharities.org/

For nearly 75 years, Catholic Charities has provided food, clothing, shelter and a network of support services to people of all ages and from all walks of life and religious backgrounds. They are stepping up and helping to aid victims of Hurricane Harvey in any way that they can. If you have clothing you are looking to get rid of, this would be the perfect organization to donate them to!
