What was your reaction when you found out you were pregnant? The day I found out I was pregnant was one of the best days of my life. We had completely planned the pregnancy and we conceived the third month trying with obviously little difficulty. I was 35 and Noah was 37. I was ready…prepared… and after waiting so long, it was an incredible feeling.
Were you hoping for a specific gender? I feel we were both hoping for a girl. I had nooo idea about the gender when I was pregnant and we chose to be surprised. Of course we knew we’d be thrilled with a healthy child of any gender! Most people in my life felt I was expecting a girl. We had a planned a home birth after seeing the Movie “The Business of Being Born” and the midwife, my sister and Noah were present at the birth. It was an incredible experience and the best day of my life. My child came into the world in warm water in the birthing pool set up in my very own living room. I remember that I didn’t even know about the gender for the first couple of minutes of holding my newborn who was wrapped in a wet towel both of us still in the pool. Finally my sister blurted out, “is it a boy or a girl?!” and I peeked under the towel and saw she was a baby girl! I’m weeping just remembering it…
How was your experience being pregnant? What were some of the "perks" of it? My experience being pregnant was very mixed. Of course I was ecstatic but it’s hard to feel it in the beginning. I had mild sickness at the beginning which stopped exactly by 12 weeks. Despite it being mild, it was awful. I was gaining weight all over but not showing at all until the 5th month. I was ready for people to know but didn’t really tell too many at work until I had a bit of a bump. “Perks” I don’t remember too much. I do remember being hungry ALL the time, which continued through nursing as well. At one point in the pregnancy, I had a terrible, stabbing pain in my neck that kept me up at 37 weeks for 8 days straight. I found relief through acupuncture, 3 sessions. I had heart burn a lot, my feet were swollen, I gained 60 lbs. One of the greatest points of my pregnancy is that I didn’t have to go anywhere for my doctor’s appointments because my midwife would come to the home. We would hear the baby’s heartbeat and measure my growth. I had so much support and education during my pregnancy from the person who was going to help her come into the world. Also, I chose not to do any invasive procedures or imaging. I just trusted in myself and my network. Lastly, just knowing that I was growing my child in my body completely amazed me.
Did you have a difficult time picking out a name? Were there any names that your partner liked more than you did? We had picked out two awesome names, Myles Benjamin and Ruby Susan. Both of us loved the names and the names seemed to choose us! The name “Ruby” came to me one night as I was lying in bed…it just popped into my mind and I said it aloud. We both knew it was perfect. Then I added the name Susan, for Noah’s mom who left us way too soon. Myles Benjamin was inspired by Noah who is a jazz bassist and his Grandpa, who was Benjamin. From the minute Ruby was born, her name seemed to fit her perfectly.
What is one trait that your child has that you definitely think came from you? There’s so many things. We have similar looks, although she also resembles her father. Many people say she’s my “mini me." She’s got a very strong will and tons of energy. She has a quick temper, is very social and definitely a Drama Queen. Lastly, she's great with a soccer ball.
