Ruby Rose's "Break Free" Video Is Everything We Need Right Now
Australian model, DJ, actress, recording artist - and so much more - Ruby Rose created a powerful gender role music video back in 2014. The 5 minute short film features a blonde, tight dress, high-heeled Rose in her bathroom. Minute by minute she strips away her hair, make-up, nail polish, and scrubs her skin to show her always bad ass tattoos. As the film continues Rose's character begins wrapping her breasts and putting on a prosthetic penis. Transforming into the man she wants to be she practices yelling to be "What are you looking at?!" before lighting a cigarette as the music fades out. The song in the film is by a band called Butterfly Boucher and their single "It Pulls Me Under." Fitting for the material in the film and the production.
"Break Free" addresses gender stereotypes and gender roles,Trans, and what it is like to have an identity that deviates from the status quo. I've always been a huge fan of Ruby Rose, even before I knew she was on OITNB. She has always carried herself with such poise while still giving those the finger that disapprove of her lifestyle choices. If I ever decided to switch fields she'd be the first person I'd call.
Go Ruby, do your thing!
